Intimate wedding ceremony on Vis Island, Croatia

Coastal elopements and intimate beach weddings are definitely gaining more and more popularity these days. Instead of large lavish parties married couples rather prefer spending “their big day” day in privacy, traveling and exploring the world without the distraction of protocols, obligations and formalities! One of the challenging decision couples have to face when planning their wedding day is definitely deciding on the perfect location! Because let’s be real, when you realize you have the whole world at your feet, it’s hard to choose the right one!

This wonderful couple, who's wedding I photographed last summer immediately made it clear they wanted to get married by the sea but they only had a vague vision of the exact location! Since I am from Croatia and know the coast very well, I offered them various options. After careful planning and consultation, we decided that their “forever island” would be the island of Visa!

Why Choose Vis Island For Your Intimate Beach Wedding

Vis is a small island in the Adriatic Sea, located 45 km from the mainland of Croatia which gained popularity after the hit film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, directed by Ol Parker was filmed there in 2017 (Movie Shooting Locations). No wonder out of all location the choose to shoot the movie there since Vis, together with its surrounding islands, has been an integral part of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network since 2019 (Croatia Full of Life, Geopark Vis Archipelago).

After spending a week exploring the island, I have decided to highlight the most beautiful locations that will make your intimate wedding unforgettable:

  • Blue cave

One of the most fascinating places you can visit on Vis is the Blue Cave, which "according to many world travelers and dignitaries, surpasses the world-famous Grotta Azzurra cave on the island of Capri near Naples"(Holidays In Komiža, 2020). Indeed, visiting the Blue Cave was an unforgettable experience for me and I know it will make your wedding even more special!

  • Stiniva Beach

Of all the beaches I have visited, Stiniva Beach definitely left a lasting impression on me. The white sand and crystal-clear water was truly unforgettable, and the journey to the beach itself is memorable because it can only be reached on foot or by hiring a taxi boat from the nearby town of Rukavac - which makes the whole adventure even more exciting! It was only later, when I started exploring, that I learned "Stiniva Beach was named the most beautiful European beach" (European Best Destinations, 2016) which wasn't really a big surprise for me since it is absolutely breahtaking!

  • Komarča Beach

Although this beach may not be ranked among the most beautiful on the island of Is, it came highly recommended by the locals. When we came to the beach the newlyweds instantly decided it was the perfect spot to exchange their vows! The entire ceremony was incredibly romantic, and although the wind was blowing throughout (which is typical due to Visa's location), it did not detract from the atmosphere at all!

The couple were so immersed in that special moment that neither rain, nor wind, nor the infamous "bura" wind could diminish the experience.

Exciting Activities That Will Make Your Wedding Day an Absolute Adventure

Whether you want to spend your wedding day exploring secluded coves, sailing by boat or even hiking — Vis can definitely offer you both! If you want to get to know the island more deeply and visit places that are not so touristy, I recommend renting a kayak since it gives you complete freedom of movement and allows you to visit secluded coves that tourists usually don’t go to.

Also, if you are sporty types, the island of Vis is great for hiking, although it is relatively small, it is hilly and its highest point is Hum peak (508 meters above sea level) from where you have a breathtaking view of the entire island.

Best Seasons For Your Beach Wedding on Vis Island

If you plan a wedding during the summer, you can expect tourists because Croatia is a well-known tourist destination. This wedding took place at the beginning of June, and although there were tourists, there were no major crowds. The Island is crowded in July and August, so if you seek a bit of privacy, I recommend May, June, and September when there are fewer crowds and the heat is milder.

This elopement, in all its purity and simplicity, taught me a valuable lesson about love and life: we are not here to accumulate material possessions, but to feel deeply and experience the richness of life in all its beautiful complexities!

I wish this beautiful couple many more years, exciting years together—full of growth, development and mutual support! Hope you guys become the best versions of yourselves together!
